Commercial authorization in the EU for GM crops is required in accordance with Directive 2001/18/EC (on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms and repealing Council Directive 90/220/EEC) and EC regulation no. 258/97 (concerning new foods and food ingredients, Official Journal of the European Communities - 14.02.1997 - No L 043, P. 0001-0007).
These legislations require a method to detect and identify the GM crop or product. In Directive 2001/18/EC, it is specified that the detection method is for monitoring purposes and must be GM event specific; however, for Regulation 258/97, the detection method is used for labeling as a GMO.
DNAVision SA has appropriate methods to detect and characterize specific GM events in GMO products.
The detection method is usually based on PCR (including the use of primer sequences which uniquely identify the GM event in the GM product) and on the SOP describing the conditions under which PCR can be used to detect the GM product. For food approval under Regulation 258/97, the PCR method will be applicable for the detection of recombinant DNA for the purposes of GMO labeling.
